Essential Nursing Skills and Hands-On Learning

At East Ohio College School of Nursing, our online courses focus on cultivating well-rounded nurses with hands-on skills. Throughout the program, you’ll acquire essential skills, including:

Procedural and Emergency Care Skills

• Foley Catheterization
  • Place and manage urinary catheters and other drainage devices.
• Nasogastric (NG) Tube 
  • Insert feeding tubes through the nose to the stomach for nutritional support.
• IV Insertion
  • Position a catheter into a vein to directly administer fluids, medications, or other essential treatments into the patient’s bloodstream.
• Medication Administration
  • Administer medications through various routes (oral, IV, etc.) with accurate calculations and protocol adherence.
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ALS) 
  • Conduct advanced cardiac life support interventions, including defibrillation and administration of emergency medications.
• Trauma Care
  • Control bleeding, stabilize fractures, and address other traumatic injuries.

Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving Skills

• Assessment
  • Gather and evaluate data from various sources to identify patient problems and potential risks.
• Clinical Decision-Making
  • Utilize knowledge, expertise, and evidence-based practice to ensure safe and proficient decisions regarding patient care.

  • Recognize issues, explore alternatives, prioritize patient interventions, and choose the most suitable course of action for each patient.

  • Comprehend and effectively utilize diverse patient monitoring devices, including cardiac monitors, ventilators, and infusion pumps.
• Clinical Decision Support Systems
  • Utilize technology tools offering evidence-based information and clinical decision support to enhance the precision and efficacy of nursing interventions.

Student nurses refine these skills through a multifaceted approach, which includes online classes, hands-on labs at our East Ohio College location, and clinical rotations at Mercy Health’s St. Elizabeth Youngstown and Boardman Hospitals or Trinity Medical Center West or East.
