East Ohio College understands the challenges that individuals with ADHD must face in their daily lives and during their education. ADHD can significantly impact a student’s academic performance, and it is important to provide ADHD students with the support they need to succeed. Keep reading to learn more about what ADHD is, how it affects college students, and resources to help manage symptoms throughout college.

What is ADHD?

Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, commonly referred to as ADHD, is a developmental disorder that causes symptoms such as impulsiveness, disorganization, problems focusing, poor time management, and more, all of which can be detrimental to students. While ADHD is more commonly diagnosed in males due to the external behaviors that males present, females also can struggle with ADHD. Seeing a trusted healthcare professional is recommended for individuals who have symptoms of ADHD that disrupt everyday life.

There are three different subtypes of ADHD, and determining which type an individual has will help develop successful treatment and academic plans. The three types of diagnosed ADHD are inattentive type, hyperactive/impulsive type, and combined type.

Those who are diagnosed with ADHD can manage the condition with medication, psychotherapy, or a combination of the two. With the proper treatment plan, individuals with ADHD can manage their symptoms and have successful academic experiences.

Resources For College Students With ADHD

For students who need to manage ADHD, college may present more challenges. However, an enriching and successful academic journey is possible with the right support network and resources.

Students with ADHD often benefit from strategies to help manage their symptoms and succeed academically. These strategies may include developing organizational skills, setting realistic goals, and taking breaks throughout the day. Additionally, getting support and help from family, friends, their academic team, or mental health professionals can be beneficial.

Virtual Tools

  • Text to Audio Service

An online service that converts bodies of text into audio, like Speechify, allows students who struggle to focus on large written text to listen to material rather than read it.

  • Focus Timer

A focus timer helps students who struggle with distraction and need structure during their study time. A good online timer app for students is Be Focused, which allows students to set a duration of study time followed by short breaks.

  • Virtual Task Manager

Many online task management services, both free and paid versions, allow students to input their tasks and organize them in a way that works for them. Task management services such as Asana, Todoist, and Basecamp, enable students to see their to-do lists visually, helping things not slip through the cracks.

  • Virtual Therapy

A comprehensive way to manage the symptoms of ADHD is through speaking with a trained professional. Virtual therapy services such as BetterHelp and Talkspace offer therapists who specialize in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which is commonly used to manage the effects of ADHD.

Tactical Tools

  • Noise Canceling Headphones or Focus Music

Noise can be a major distraction for students with ADHD, and noise-canceling headphones can help block out distracting sounds. Also, choosing a playlist of music curated to help improve concentration can be helpful.

  • Color-Coded Planner or Calendar

For students who prefer a physical list as opposed to using a virtual service, a color-coded planner or calendar can be a great tool for organizing important tasks.

  • Fidgets

Some popular fidget tools, such as squeeze balls, spinners, or pop-its, have been known to help students with ADHD by providing a non-distracting way to keep their hands busy, improving concentration, and reducing restlessness.

  • Physical Activity

Engaging in physical activity can help students release pent-up energy and lead to better concentration and motivation. During study breaks, it can be beneficial to take walks, do yoga, or engage in any other activity that you enjoy.
