A Change in Direction
Before attending East Ohio College, Sienna had already explored higher education through College Credit Plus at Kent State and additional classes at Eastern Gateway Community College. While she had originally considered pursuing a career in nursing, she soon realized it was not the right fit for her. Instead, she found herself drawn to a different area of healthcare to medical coding.
At the time, Sienna was working full-time as a hairstylist at a local salon and part-time at the YMCA. She needed a program that could fit into her busy schedule while also preparing her for a new and rewarding career. EOC offers some flexibility with online and online/hybrid class options that combine online lectures and coursework with real-world experience. EOC’s online Medical Coding program provided exactly what she was looking for.
Choosing Medical Coding
Sienna chose medical coding because it allowed her to combine her interest in healthcare with a skill she found both enjoyable and rewarding. “I had already known that nursing was not for me,” she explained, “but I found coding fun to do and something I really enjoyed.”
Her decision proved to be the right one. Throughout her time at EOC, Sienna acquired the fundamental knowledge and hands-on experience necessary to prepare for a career in medical coding. She particularly valued her externship, which gave her the opportunity to apply classroom learning in real-world settings and deepen her understanding of medical coding.
When asked about her favorite part of attending EOC, Sienna quickly mentioned the exceptional faculty. She highlighted Dr. Kacey Eagle as her favorite instructor, praising her dedication to her students. “She truly cares about her students and is always there to help whenever she is needed,” Sienna shared.
Her coding classes were another highlight of her experience, offering both challenge and enjoyment. Sienna’s externship was equally impactful, providing her with invaluable skills and confidence as she prepared for her career.
Sienna Looks Ahead
After graduation, Sienna’s goal is to work for a small office or insurance company, and within five years, she hopes to be working for Veterans Affairs (VA). She feels confident in reaching these goals thanks to the education and preparation she received at East Ohio College. “EOC has prepared me for the future by providing me with all the knowledge and resources that I need to excel in my field,” she explained.
Sienna does not hesitate to recommend East Ohio College to others. She has already referred friends, citing the excellent classes and supportive instructors. Her advice to new students is simple yet powerful: “Go for it and give it your all. Even though things may get hard sometimes, it is so worth it in the end.”
Reflecting on her journey, Sienna describes her overall experience at EOC as “great.” She found the faculty to be kind, encouraging, and always available to help students succeed. Her story is an inspiring reminder that with the right support, it is never too late to change direction, follow your passions, and prepare for a meaningful career.
