What Is Certified Nurses Day?
Certified Nurses Day is globally recognized to celebrate nurses who have become professionally certified, generally and in a specialty. The date for this special day was chosen to honor Dr. Margretta Madden Styles, who was a pioneer in nursing education and credentialing. March 19th was Dr. Styles’ birthday.
Dr. Styles’s impact on the nursing field was monumental; she emphasized the importance of nurses meeting nationally recognized standards and promoted career-long growth and learning. Her influence has significantly shaped the nursing profession as we know it today.
How To Celebrate Certified Nurses Day
Nurses are integral in the daily function of the healthcare team, and their impact spans beyond just helping patients. Every healthcare team member has been impacted in some way by a nurse. Excellent nurses contribute to the healthcare environment by providing patient care, boosting morale, focusing on safety, and improving job satisfaction within their team.
There are many ways to recognize the nurses in your life this Certified Nurses Day. Whether you are a member of the healthcare team, the loved one of a nurse, or a patient, you can show the nurses in your life that you appreciate their hard work. Below are four simple solutions for showing nurses that you care.
-
Encourage Professional Growth
The hospital and medical facilities can enable the nurses to pursue further specializations and certifications by providing support, resources, mentorship, and encouragement.
-
Write A Thank You Note
A few words of thanks are often enough to make a nurse feel seen and appreciated. Sharing a hand-written note, social media post, or nominating a nurse who has significantly impacted you are excellent ways to recognize a nurse in your life.
-
Give A Small Gift
For those who wish to go beyond writing a simple thank you note, giving a small gift of appreciation is another way to acknowledge a nurse’s hard work. Gifting a nurse their favorite drink, snack, or a career-focused gift can show them they are important.
-
Share Inspiring Stories
Finally, it is important to share the accomplishments of nurses on social media, in blogs, or in newsletters. This offers a more formal way to recognize the achievements of nurses.
Hear From EOC Nursing Alumni!
This Certified Nurses Day, East Ohio College is thrilled to share words of wisdom from three of our Nursing program graduates who are making an impact in the medical field: Susan Reynolds, Julie Lozier, and Nicole Oxley!
Susan graduated from EOC’s Nursing class of 2022 and has since sat for and passed the NCLEX-RN* licensure examination. She is currently working as Director of Nursing for Threshold Residential Services.
Susan’s advice for anyone interested in a nursing career is to be prepared to make sacrifices, experience self-doubt, and endure soul-searching. “You realize becoming an RN is a goal worth pushing yourself to complete.”
Julie graduated from EOC’s Nursing program in 2020, has since passed the NCLEX-RN* exam, and is thriving in her career as a psychiatric nurse at an inpatient behavioral health hospital. She says her hands-on training and real-world clinicals as an EOC student guided her toward her current position. “These experiences allowed me to choose the right specialty for myself post-graduation.”
Nicole graduated as part of EOC’s Nursing Class of 2020 and has since passed the NCLEX-RN* licensure examination; she now works as a gastrointestinal nurse in an outpatient clinic for endoscopies and colonoscopies. She says that the smaller school environment of EOC allows for more personalized training, which she recommends to anyone interested in nursing. “I think the atmosphere is like a family, not that of a typical college program, and they really try to help students succeed.”
