Prioritizing Mental Health In Healthcare

May is Mental Health Awareness Month!

Mental health is a critical issue affecting millions, including those who dedicate their lives to caring for others. In the fast-paced, high-pressure world of healthcare, mental wellness is often an afterthought. But at East Ohio College (EOC), we believe that healthcare starts with caring for yourself first.
Prioritizing Mental Health In Healthcare

This Mental Health Awareness Month, we’re proud to support the next generation of healthcare professionals by promoting mental health awareness and encouraging open conversations. Our students are not only learning how to care for their patients but also how to prioritize their own mental and emotional well-being.

Keep reading to learn more about Mental Health Awareness Month, why mental health matters in healthcare, and how you can take steps to break the stigma and support positive change.

Breaking The Mental Health Stigma

Since 1949, Mental Health Awareness Month has served as an opportunity to raise awareness about mental health challenges and reduce the stigma surrounding them. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), 1 in 5 Americans experience a mental illness each year. Despite how common mental health struggles are, stigma often prevents individuals from seeking help.

Organizations like Mental Health America lead efforts to normalize conversations around mental health, increase access to resources, and foster a more supportive environment. At East Ohio College, we are proud to join these efforts by educating and empowering future healthcare professionals to speak up, support one another, and prioritize their well-being.

The Invisible Struggle: Mental Health For Healthcare Workers

Beneath the scrubs, many healthcare professionals silently face emotional exhaustion, compassion fatigue, and chronic stress. Despite being expected to remain calm and composed under pressure, the demands of long shifts and emotionally intense situations take a serious toll. Too often, these professionals prioritize their patients at the expense of their own mental health.

Burnout is a particularly serious concern, especially among nurses. According to the American Nurses Association, approximately 62% of nurses report feeling burned out during their careers. Constant exposure to high-stress environments and emotionally charged scenarios can leave even the most dedicated caregivers feeling overwhelmed.

At East Ohio College, we believe acknowledging and addressing these challenges is vital to healthcare education. Future healthcare heroes deserve the tools and support to care for themselves and others.

Take Control of Your Mental Health

Taking control of your mental health looks different for everyone, but it starts with awareness, action, and self-compassion. As a healthcare student, now is the time to establish healthy habits and build emotional resilience that will support you throughout your career.

Ways to support your mental health include:

  • Advocating for yourself and others
  • Practicing self-awareness and mindfulness
  • Setting realistic expectations and boundaries
  • Knowing where to find support and resources

Prioritizing your mental health isn’t a sign of weakness — it’s a strength. It makes you a better caregiver, classmate, colleague, and individual. By developing these skills now, you’re protecting your own well-being and setting an example for the people you’ll care for in the future.
