What is Cybersecurity?

The need for qualified professionals to protect against cyber threats in today’s digital landscape is expected to grow. Cybersecurity professionals play vital roles in identifying potential shortcomings, developing strategies to address risks, implementing security measures, and continuously monitoring security issues. There is no shortage of threats that cybersecurity professionals can protect companies and individuals against, including hacking, ransomware, malware, and phishing, among others. As technology continues to evolve, the threats to online safety also change. Cybersecurity professionals must be up-to-date on the latest technology and have strong problem-solving skills. Some of the basic skills these professionals utilize include knowledge of databases, firewalls, networks, and encryption.

Three main concepts that are essential for cybersecurity professionals to understand and implement are:

  • Protection– EOC trains cybersecurity professionals in gap assessment, which allows them to identify weak areas and formulate solutions before problems arise.
  • Detection– In the event of an attack, cybersecurity professionals will be notified by alarm measures they had previously set in place during the gap assessment. They will also be able to address the issue using countermeasures learned during their education to limit the damage the attacker can do.
  • Recovery– Cybersecurity professionals are also trained in data recovery, allowing them to limit the damage done during an attack and develop recovery plans for crucial lost data.

Cybersecurity, in its most basic form, protects an organization from attacks, detects issues within technological systems, and recovers data if an attack occurs. Students in the online Cybersecurity program at East Ohio College can expect to receive the training and skills to perform each step in the process.
