CORE NURSING SKILLS AND HANDS-ON LEARNING

At East Ohio College School of Nursing, our online courses focus on developing hands-on skills for molding well-rounded nurses. Throughout the program, online, hybrid East Liverpool nursing students will gain essential skills, including:

Procedural and Emergency Care Skills

• Foley Catheterization
  • Placement and management of urinary catheters and other drainage devices.
• Nasogastric (NG) Tube 
  • Insertion of a feeding tube through the nose to the stomach for nutritional support.
• IV Insertion
  • Placement of a catheter into a vein to directly administer fluids, medications, or other essential treatments into the patient’s bloodstream.
• Medication Administration
  • Safely administer medications through various routes (oral, IV, etc.) with accurate calculations and adherence to protocols.
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) 
  • Perform and practice advanced cardiac life support interventions, including defibrillation and administration of emergency medications.
• Trauma Care
  • Control bleeding, stabilize fractures, and address other traumatic injuries.

Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving Skills

• Assessment
  • Collect and analyze data from various sources to identify patient problems and potential risks.
• Clinical Decision-Making
  • Use knowledge, experience, and evidence-based practice to make safe and effective decisions regarding patient care.
• Problem-Solving
  • Identify problems, consider options, prioritize patient interventions, and select the most appropriate course of action for each patient.

Interprofessional Skills

• Collaboration
  • Engage in clear and collaborative communication with healthcare team members, ensuring effective information exchange while promoting a unified approach to patient care.

  • Manage patient records efficiently, facilitating the organized and timely sharing of information among healthcare team members to enhance collaboration and communication.

  • Work with healthcare team members to collectively prioritize tasks, ensuring efficient use of time and addressing critical patient care needs promptly.

Technology Skills

• Electronic Health Record (EHR) Systems
  • Navigate and utilize EHR systems proficiently to accurately and efficiently document patient information, including assessments, medications, and care plans.
• Patient Monitoring Devices
  • Understand and utilize various patient monitoring devices, including cardiac monitors, ventilators, and infusion pumps, to effectively manage patient care.
• Clinical Decision Support Systems
  • Leverage technology tools that provide evidence-based information and clinical decision support to enhance the accuracy and effectiveness of nursing interventions.
