Celebrating American Heart Month

February marks the start of American Heart Month, an opportunity to raise awareness of heart complications and empower individuals to take charge of their heart health. At East Ohio College (EOC), we believe that education is an important factor in building a healthier community, and that starts with understanding why heart health is important.

Why Heart Health Awareness Matters

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), heart disease remains the leading cause of death for individuals in the United States. The number of individuals and families affected by heart disease is staggering; however, many heart complications can be prevented or minimized by lifestyle changes, early and often testing, and access to quality healthcare. American Heart Month is a testament to the small, consistent actions that add up to make a significant difference in long-term heart health.

The American Heart Association (AHA) encourages wearing red in support of those affected by heart conditions, sharing educational resources, volunteering at local healthcare centers, and simply talking about cardiovascular health this month.

How To Be Heart-Healthy

Making small improvements to your diet, habits, mindset, and daily routine can improve both your heart health and your overall quality of life. Some of the most impactful strategies to improve heart health include eating a well-balanced diet, staying physically active, and managing stress.

Early detection makes a big difference in managing, treating, and preventing heart conditions. Regularly checking blood pressure, sodium, cholesterol, and other levels is an excellent way to stay mindful of your health. Additionally, the AMA encourages individuals to take action during American Heart Month by scheduling a check-up or speaking with their medical provider about becoming more heart-healthy.

The Role of Healthcare Professionals in Heart Health

At East Ohio College, healthcare education and awareness go hand in hand. Through nursing and allied healthcare training programs, EOC is helping prepare students for careers at the front line of cardiovascular care and beyond.

Nurses and medical assistants are two types of healthcare professionals who play a crucial role in identifying the early warning signs of heart disease, including irregular heart rhythms, high blood pressure, and lifestyle risk factors. These medical professionals often work closely with patients and connect with them on a personal level, providing resources to help them make healthier choices and make informed decisions.

Training The Next Generation of Healthcare Workers

By training healthcare professionals with the skills and knowledge they need, EOC is helping strengthen the health of Northeastern Ohio, one patient at a time. Our students learn both clinical skills needed to provide high-quality care and bedside skills, including patient education and compassionate communication.

Heart disease has a significant impact on rural and underserved communities, including some less-populated areas throughout Ohio, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania. A combination of geography, population, and access to care can make prevention and early diagnosis more challenging. East Ohio College is proud to help address this issue by offering online and hybrid education that gives students the opportunity to train close to home and serve the communities where they live. Many of our students and graduates work in local clinics, hospitals, long-term care facilities, and other settings, where they have a direct impact on their communities every day.

East Ohio College Is Here For You!

American Heart Month serves as a reminder that a healthy heart does not rely on one individual; it’s a community effort. Encouraging your loved ones to make healthier choices, advocating for accessible healthcare, and prioritizing healthcare education are all ways you can get involved during American Heart Month.

This month and beyond, EOC urges everyone to focus on their heart health. Schedule a check-up with your doctor, learn your levels, move your body, and begin conversations about prevention. Together, we can build healthier hearts, stronger communities, and brighter futures.
