The History of Men’s Health Month

Men’s Health Month is observed each June, following its establishment in 1994 by the Men’s Health Network. The goal of Men’s Health Month is to educate boys, men, and their families about preventable health concerns that affect the male population and encourage healthier lifestyles.

The blue ribbon is associated with Men’s Health Month and inspired the “Wear Blue Campaign,” which encourages individuals to wear blue throughout June in support of the initiative. Read on to discover five additional tips you can use to support the well-being of yourself or the men in your life.

1. Educate Yourself and Others

Education and awareness are the building blocks of improved health and well-being. Shedding light on the health concerns that men face is crucial for empowering them to take control of their health. Educating yourself on possible conditions and reducing the stigma surrounding early and regular screenings can help you avoid unnecessary medical complications.

2. Visit Your Doctor

Men’s Health Month serves as a reminder to schedule that doctor’s visit you may have been putting off. Early detection of certain conditions, such as heart disease, hypertension, and high cholesterol, can yield a significantly positive treatment outcome. Routine testing can also detect some forms of cancer and other conditions that require intense treatment.

Before your doctor’s appointment, it’s wise to write down any concerns or questions you have for your physician so you don’t forget them in the moment. You can also ask your doctor for a printed summary of the topics you discussed to reference later.

3. Change Your Diet and Exercise Regimen

Improving overall health starts with a balanced diet and exercise. Exercising regularly and eating a well-balanced diet can have a positive impact on both mental and physical health. Food provides our bodies with the fuel needed to function and thrive, so it is essential to prioritize a healthy diet that supplies the vital nutrients we need. Not only does the food you eat affect your energy, but it can also boost your mood and reduce stress levels, all of which can lower your risk of developing certain health conditions.

One way to improve your diet is to follow a meal plan and prepare meals at home. With this, you can alter your diet to fit your specific needs and control the quality of the food you consume. Remember, the better you eat, the better you will feel!

4. Get Plenty of Rest

Adults are recommended to get at least seven hours of sleep per night, according to the Mayo Clinic. A good night’s sleep is a non-negotiable part of improving health, as it gives the body time to rest and recover. Consistently getting less than the recommended amount of sleep can be linked to several chronic health issues, including a weakened immune system, diabetes, and heart disease.

5. Spend Time With Loved Ones

This June, make spending time with friends and family a priority. These connections are crucial for enhancing your mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Whether it’s something as simple as taking a walk or playing a sport together, families and friends who are active together often live healthier lifestyles overall. Regardless of how you and your loved ones spend time, be sure to appreciate how much it can improve your health!
